There are several options when it comes to lawnmowers. Knowing the different operating styles can help you choose the right one for your needs.
Hand-Push Reel
Hand-push reel mowers are likely the most environmentally friendly and the least costly option for a new lawnmower. These mowers are operated purely under the power of your own muscles. Modern design makes them easy to push, as long as the reels are kept lubricated and the blades are periodically sharpened. Hand push mowers do require some effort, though, so they are best suited to small, level lawns.
Corded Electric
If you prefer to put in a little less effort, then an electric mower is just the thing. The only drawback is that you are tethered by the cord. For that reason, these mowers are best for us in small to medium-sized lawns, but small hills won't be an issue as they can be with a hand push reel mower.
Cordless Electric
Cordless electric lawn mowers solve the tethering problem neatly. Instead of a cord, the lawnmower has a rechargeable battery that can be topped off between mowings. Cordless mowers are suited for medium lawns but don't work well for larger lawns due to the limited running time of the battery. You can opt to purchase additional batteries and switch them out as one runs low if you prefer to use a cordless mower for a large lawn.
Petrol Push
If you need more power, extended run times, or a larger mowing deck, then the petrol mower may be the answer. Petrol-powered engines are typically much more powerful than electric motors, so they can power larger cutting blades and power through both lawn grass and low growing brush. The added power allows them to operate a larger blade, as well, so you can get larger mowing decks that allow you to cut a greater area much more quickly. The main issues with petrol lawnmowers are the exhaust odours and the need to purchase petrol.
Riding Mowers
For large lawns or those over hilly terrain, nothing is better than a riding or ride-upon lawnmower. These require minimal physical effort to operate. They also have the largest mowing decks, which can lead to less time spent tending the home lawn. Most riding lawn mowers are fueled by petrol, although some electric models are coming onto the market.
